The film ‘In Rajasthan’ is an intimate look at a disappearing culture in one of India’s most traditional states. It is the story of two families, one Hindu and one Muslim, living in an ancient village in the Thar Desert whose lives have been interwoven for thousands of years with the Rajputs, once their feudal lords and protectors. They speak candidly about child marriage, their qualms about their spouses, the caste system, the dubious future of children exposed to the modern world, the afterlife, and the religious differences between them. Today, their traditional way of life is besieged, but their struggles with family, allegiance, religious conflict and death seem timeless.

In some provinces in the Philippines, to this day, boys around the age of 10 are circumcised. But not in hospitals, like in the city — they are cut in a stream. The boys strip, jump into the water, line up, chew guava leaves, and then face the moment of truth: Brave or Cowardly? Rene-boy, an introverted 10 year old who is the son of Itoy, the Mang Tutuli (performer of circumcisions). Everyone loves Itoy seen as the ultimate man’s man. Rene-boy’s brother is Kinopi, a ferocious bully, who follows in his father’s footsteps as being tough and charismatic. After Rene-boy runs away from his circumcision, a shadow of shame is cast on him. Rene-boy’s young mother, is tough yet tender to him,  and warns him that inevitably he will have to find courage. Based on his mothers words,  Rene-boy embarks on the ultimate challenge: to prove to his father that he’s a man.
